C-suite wisdom, now in audio. Press play:

As artificial intelligence moves from support tool to full-fledged augmentation (if not yet the replacement) for top engineering talent, the role of the CTO is becoming more strategic than ever. It’s no longer enough to manage software development teams and ensure infrastructure uptime. The CTO of the future is a systems architect of superintelligence ecosystems, a designer of trust, a builder of competitive advantage — and a leader who can turn compute power into real business value.

The CTO Who Builds the Future — Not Just Systems

The scenarios for the very near future (2027+) no longer sound like science fiction. Companies are already testing AI models that write code faster than senior developers and can replicate their actions across thousands of parallel instances. But not every organization is equipped to turn that technology into a true advantage.

Today’s companies need leaders who understand both the possibilities and the limits of AI – leaders who can match the speed of innovation with the weight of responsibility.

CTO is no longer focused only on the tech stack. It’s someone who understands that AI without trust is risk — not strategy. Technology leaders today must think strategically – not just about tools, but about their impact on people, on business decisions, and on the direction the company is taking.

The New CTO Profile: Specialization, AI, and Emerging Career Paths

As artificial intelligence grows in importance, the CTO role is shifting — from a broad, catch-all function to one that is increasingly specialized. Today’s companies, especially scale-ups, expect their technology leaders to have hands-on AI expertise, an ability to manage implementation costs, and the flexibility to integrate diverse tech solutions — not just rely on standard cloud services.

As a result, what was once a single role is now being divided into multiple new leadership positions:

  • Chief AI Officer – responsible for AI strategy and deployment,
  • Chief Compute Officer – oversees infrastructure, energy usage, and compute resources,
  • AI Alignment & Risk Officer – ensures systems are developed and operate safely, ethically, and in line with organizational values.

We’re also seeing the rise of entirely new career paths — from Chief AI Stewards, who lead model audits and transparency efforts, to AI Product Owner who ensure the products and services incorporate AI effectively, to AI Innovation VPs overseeing large-scale implementations of LLM or ML-base AI automations, while keeping focus on AI safety and specialized infrastructure – all the way to AI Board Advisors who sit at the board level and assess technological opportunities and risks.

These are no longer purely technical roles. They hold strategic weight — on par with CROs, CFOs and COOs — and are emerging not just in the private sector, but within public institutions tasked with overseeing the safe development of artificial intelligence.

CTOs Without AI Expertise? Diminishing Influence

The tech industry is clear: leaders who fail to evolve their AI skillsets are losing strategic influence

Instead of sitting at the decision-making table, many are being pushed into more operational roles — such as VP of Engineering, where the focus is on delivery but not direction, or into external advisory positions with less impact on internal choices.

Meanwhile, those gaining real influence are the leaders who:

  • understand the risks and implications of AI and know how to manage them,
  • build teams that are embracing AI and are resilient in the face of automation,
  • and actively engage with regulators and institutions shaping the future of the technology.

Key Competencies of the Future CTO

  • Responsible AI Leadership
Understanding and implementing key standards and regulations (e.g., the EU AI Act, NIST, ISO). A modern CTO must go beyond box-ticking — they must actively manage risk and ensure AI is safe, lawful, and aligned with the company’s values.
  • Strategic Compute Management
Planning infrastructure, budgeting for energy and GPU resources, and — when needed — building independent systems rather than relying solely on cloud providers.
  • AI System Security
Knowledge of how to secure AI models, detect misuse, and protect organizational assets from unauthorized access or manipulation.
  • Regulatory Collaboration
The ability to communicate with oversight bodies, negotiate access to compute resources, and build trust through transparent compliance and governance.
  • Human-Centric Team Design
As AI automates more routine tasks, it’s crucial to develop talent that adapts – and contributes to change. CTOs must build teams that evolve with the tech, not get replaced by it.

The CTO of the Future: Fast, Thoughtful, and Responsible

In an era where AI is the driving force behind intellectual work, the CTO role extends far beyond technology. It’s about building infrastructure, embedding safety, and shaping a culture of responsibility. Those who take on that challenge today will have the edge tomorrow — and reduce the chance that technology grows beyond their control.

The future belongs to leaders who move quickly — but never carelessly. CTO 2.0 sees AI not as a ready-made solution, but as a tool for designing business and society with intention. A leader who can confidently say:

“Yes, we can build this.”
And just as importantly:
“But should we?”
